"Guitrau"

Google & ChatGPT

The family name Guitrau is extremely rare, but it fits clearly into the family of Old French / Occitan surnames that came from Germanic personal names after the Frankish period.

The Guitrau surname is of French origin, likely derived from the Occitan word guitrau, meaning "a large cooking pot," indicating an occupational name for a potter or artisan. It is also linked to the similar surname Guitreau, which may stem from a medieval term for a musical instrument or be an altered form of the Swiss-French name Guidroz.

Root language and history

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Germanic tribes (especially the Franks) ruled what is now France. Many first names of Germanic origin later became surnames, especially in southern France. Over centuries, spelling shifted a lot depending on region and dialect (French vs. Occitan vs. Provençal), which is why unusual forms like Guitrau exist.

Guitrau is almost certainly a regional spelling variant of names such as:

  • Guiraud
  • Guirau
  • Guiraudon
  • Guitard /      Guitaud
  • Guy / Gui

Linguistic breakdown

The name comes from two ancient Germanic elements:

1) Gui / Wido / Guido

Meaning:

  • Guide
  • Leader
  • From the wood /      wide land

This root appears in names like Guy and Guillaume.

2) -raud / -rad / -rau

From the Germanic word rād

Meaning:

  • Counsel
  • Advice
  • Wisdom

This ending appears in names like Gerard (spear + counsel) and Conrad(bold + counsel).

Meaning of the surname

When combined, the surname Guitrau most likely means:

“Wise counselor”
“Advisor or guiding leader”
“One who gives counsel or guidance”

It likely began as a patronymic surname, meaning:

“Descendant of a man named Guirau/Guiraud (the wise counselor).”

Geographic connection

This type of spelling strongly points to:

  • Southern France      (Occitan region)
  • Later Louisiana      Cajun/Creole families, due to French migration.

That’s why the name shows up most often in Louisiana genealogy today.

In simple terms

Guitrau = a southern French surname meaning “descendant of the wise counselor or guiding leader.”

Our Family History

The Guitrau family has a rich history in South Louisiana that spans generations.  We believe in preserving our traditions while embracing modern values.

In 1999, our beloved David Gillespie (son of Ola Mae Guitrau) and his son Christopher went on an adventure to explore the Guitrau ancestry.

What came out of it was a fantastic

 "The Guitrau Family" book.

We dedicate this website to David as an extention of all his hard work.
